Paris-Brest going and return.
From the capital in the Ile de France to the north-western point on the Atlantic Ocean, going and return.
Non by train, air or car, but on bike.
A thousand, two hundred and sixty kilometres to be pedaled. It's a long history began at the end of '800 to join Paris and Brest, this year place of departure of Tour de France, in an event from epic "taste".
Paris-Brest-Paris represents in fact a real monument of cycling by long distances.
His history is rich and long.
The first edition took place on 6th September 1891, when in 400 people started to run along 1.200 kilometres.
Winning that first challenge was Charles Terront, on saddle for more than 71 hours without stop to sleep, with 17,590 hourly kms going and 16,780 km/hs coming back.
Second, Jiel Laval, arrived with more than 8 hours of delay.
Considering the difficulties for roads without asphalt yet, the organizer Pierre Giffard decided that the race will take place every 10 years and so here the 1901, 1911, 1921 and 1931 editions, then the stop for the war with 1941 edition "recovered" in 1948.
Since 1975, Paris-Brest-Paris takes place every 4 years.
Besides French, for a long time affectionate to this event, this Olympiad of cycling impassions more and more people from all over the world, particularly United States, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Russia, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Finland, Bulgaria, Ireland but also Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil and South Africa.
An exciting challenge that is perpetuated day and night long, without stop, a sort of Paris-Dakar on bike.
The next meeting with the Paris-Brest-Paris is for 2011.
You got time, meanwhile enjoy you a holiday in Riccione Bike Hotels!
