October 16
In the common cyclist language it's historically named "the classical of the dead leaves" for its traditional position in the autumn's cycling calendar.
The Giro of Lombardy is one of the historical runs of the world cycling, and also the edition 2010 scheduled on Saturday 16th October will certainly be worthy of the prestige that countersigns it.
Among the "classical monument" of the international calendar, the Lombardy Giro has been held for the first time in 1905, when he won the Piedmonts Giovanni Gerbi. Since then, all the greatest champions of cycling have enrolled their name in the Albo d'oro of the race, from Costante Girardengo to Alfredo Binda, Louison Bobet, Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx, Rik Van Looy, Felice Gimondi, Roger De Vlaeminck, Francesco Moser and Bernard Hinault, up to the recent bis by Michele Bartoli and Paolo Bettini and the tris by Damiano Cunego.
In 2009, on the finishing line of the Giro of Lombardy won the Belgian Philippe Gilbert, this year already protagonist in the north classics. About the run characteristics of 2010’s edition there are still secrets, but it will be without any doubt a good occasion for bike lovers to visit Lombardy and the provinces of Milan, Varese and Como, that in the last editions were crossed by riders of this beautiful cycling classic race.
