Road Race World Cycling Championships – Copenhagen 2011

On Monday September 19th, the week of Road Race World Championships is due to begin, with cyclists crowding the roads of Copenhagen, Denmark up until September 25th. New this year, together with the Professional riders, is the return of the Junior and Under 23 categories to the world contest, a tradition suspended in 2004 after the Verona World Championship.

The five time trials will all start and finish in City Hall Square in the centre of Copenhagen, and follow a course which takes participants around the level streets of the city. It is only the Elite Men’s circuit which will stretch for 23.2 km (x 2) in the northern zone of Østerbro and Hellerup as far as Charlottenlund Slotspark, returning towards City Hall Square, riding through the spectacular Dokøen harbour area and passing in front of the famous Opera House.
But the real excitement of these world championships will be the Elite Men’s road race scheduled for the last day of the event, Sunday September 25th. The Danish circuit, stretching over 266 km, is certainly easier than that of the Australian World Championships, but the roads are more narrow and winding. The route leaves from City Hall Square and after the first 28 km stretch (including the 6.2 km of the Masterstart), it leads into a 14 km circuit around the Rudersal quarter, which has to be covered 17 times. Considering that there are only minor changes of level, the race certainly favours the sprinters, but the final stretch before Geels Hill at Kongevejen, with the climb at Slotsbakken, could well throw the result into dispute.
